Utility-scale wind is a big share of the grid both countries draw power from, and micro-hydro is a real option for the right off-grid property — but neither is a typical homeowner purchase the way solar or a heat pump is. This pillar is about understanding how they work and where they fit.
Wind turbines convert moving air into rotational energy, then electricity, via a generator — the same principle whether it's a 150m utility turbine or a small residential unit, but the economics only work at scale in most suburban settings.
A property with reliable year-round flowing water and enough elevation drop can run a micro-hydro turbine continuously — unlike solar, it doesn't stop generating at night, which makes it valuable for genuinely off-grid sites.
