Vetting a window and glazing installer: certifications and red flags
I stood in a half-finished extension on Kinsale Street in Brunswick last winter, watching a glazier's offsider gun expanding foam around a new double-glazed unit with about as much care as you'd pack a suitcase for a redeye flight. The standard that actually matters: AS 2047 and manufacturer install guides
In Australia, window and door installation for weathertightness and structural performance sits under AS 2047 (Windows and external glazed doors in buildings) alongside the manufacturer's specific installation instructions. A properly certified installer should be able to name this standard without hesitation and explain, in plain terms, what it requires: correct flashing sequence (the window goes in "shingle-style" so water sheds outward, not into the wall cavity), appropriate sealant and backing rod use, and structural fixing points rated for the wind load of your site. If you ask "what standard do you install to" and get a shrug, or a vague "we just do it properly, mate," that's your first red flag. I'd treat any glazing quote that doesn't reference a WERS or NFRC rating for the specific product being installed as a genuine red flag. Ask the installer to show you the rating label or the WERS certificate for the exact glass and frame combination quoted, not a generic range for "our double-glazed range." Glass performance changes meaningfully depending on frame material, spacer type (thermally broken aluminium versus timber versus uPVC), and gas fill. A quote that just says "double glazed, Low-E" without numbers is telling you the installer either doesn't know or doesn't want you comparing. This matters for your NatHERS star rating too. If you're doing this as part of a renovation that needs re-certification, the assessor will want the actual WERS numbers for the glazing installed, not what was quoted. Site checks: what a proper glazing install actually looks like
A few things separate a careful install from a rushed one, and you can check most of them yourself if you know what to look for. Backing rod should sit in the gap between frame and reveal before sealant goes in, giving the sealant the right shape to flex without tearing. Expanding foam, if used at all, should be low-expansion, gap-filling foam applied sparingly, not the high-expansion stuff that can bow a frame out of square. And the reveal gap itself should be consistent, generally somewhere in the 5-10mm range depending on frame size and manufacturer spec, not jammed tight in one corner and gaping in another. If you can get on site during install (and I'd genuinely push for this if you're doing more than one or two windows), look for backing rod before foam, continuous flashing tape, and a level frame checked with an actual spirit level, not eyeballed. A contractor who's happy to have you watch and explain what they're doing as they go is a good sign. One who wants you off site during the "messy bit" is not.
Questions to ask before signing
Ask for the WERS or NFRC rating on the specific product, in writing, matched to the quote. Ask which standard the installation follows and whether that's AS 2047 or a specific manufacturer install guide, and ask to see it. Ask whether the person doing the actual install is licensed or registered (if your state requires it) or whether it's subcontracted to unsupervised labour, which happens more than you'd think on volume glazing jobs. Ask what warranty covers the installation itself, separate from the manufacturer's product warranty. Product warranties are almost always longer and don't cover a badly flashed reveal. I'd also ask directly whether they do a blower-door test or air-leakage check post-install on tight builds. Most won't, and that's fine for a standard reno, but on a Passive House or high-performance build this should already be part of the air sealing sequence, and the glazing installer needs to be talking to whoever's running that process, not working in isolation.
The quote itself is a red flag detector
A proper glazing quote should itemise frame material, glass makeup (thickness of each pane, gas fill, Low-E coating position), U-value and SHGC, and installation method, separately from the unit cost.
