Product warranty vs performance warranty: the panel spec sheet trap

That's a genuine improvement when it's real, but you need to check the actual document, not the sales brochure, because some "25-year warranty" claims quietly mean 25 years performance and a shorter product term underneath.
Here's the part that catches people out: a product warranty claim requires you to prove the failure is a manufacturing defect, not wear, not water ingress from a bad install, not a roofer walking on the array. That distinction gets argued more than you'd think, and it's one reason I'd rather deal with a manufacturer that has a real Australian office or US-based support line than one whose only contact is an email address that bounces after eighteen months.
What the performance warranty is actually promising
The performance warranty is a degradation curve, not a functionality guarantee. It says something like: the panel will still produce at least 87% of its rated output in year 25 (numbers vary slightly by manufacturer and tier). It says nothing about whether the panel still physically works at all. A panel can be dead as a doornail, zero output, complete failure, and that's a product warranty issue, not a performance one. The performance warranty only matters if the panel is alive and simply producing less than the curve promises.
In practice, performance warranty claims are almost never made by homeowners. You'd need independent output testing on a single panel, isolated from the rest of the string, showing it's underperforming against the guaranteed curve specifically due to degradation rather than shading, soiling, or inverter clipping. Ironically the warranty that actually gets used is usually the inverter's, not the panel's. Inverters have moving electronic components (capacitors, cooling fans in some string units) and they fail at a meaningfully higher rate than panels within the first ten years. Standard inverter warranties run 5 to 10 years from the factory, with paid extensions available on many models out to 15 or 20 years.
