Solar warranty terms that actually matter (and the ones that don't)

I sat with a Bayswater homeowner a few years back who'd had a system quoted with "25-year warranty" printed across the top of the proposal in bold, friendly font. Panels: 25 years. Inverter: 25 years. Workmanship: 25 years. All the same number, all in the same breath, like they meant the same thing. They didn't. Not even close. The inverter she was being sold typically lasts twelve to fifteen years before it needs replacing outright, and the "25-year" figure on it was actually an optional extended warranty add-on that cost extra and wasn't included in her price. She hadn't been told that. I don't think the salesperson was lying exactly — I think he didn't know the difference either.

That's the problem with solar warranties. There are at least three separate warranties bundled into every system — panel product warranty, panel performance warranty, and inverter warranty — plus a workmanship warranty from the installer that's arguably the one most likely to actually get used. Each behaves differently, expires differently, and gets honoured (or not) by different parties. Get this wrong and the "25-year" headline number is mostly marketing.

Panel product warranty vs performance warranty: two different promises

The panel warranty on a spec sheet is actually two warranties stapled together, and reading them as one is where most confusion starts.

The product warranty covers manufacturing defects — delamination, frame corrosion, junction box failures, that sort of thing. This is typically 10-15 years from a mainstream manufacturer, occasionally 25 from premium tier-one brands. It's the warranty that pays if the panel physically fails.

The performance warranty is a different animal. It guarantees the panel will still produce a minimum percentage of its rated output after a given number of years — commonly something like 98% in year one, degrading to around 84-87% by year 25, following a slow linear or step curve. This warranty doesn't cover a failed panel. It covers a panel that's still working but has degraded faster than the curve promised. In practice, this is almost never claimed. Proving a panel is under-performing against its curve requires isolating shading, soiling, string losses and inverter clipping first — which needs a proper string-level test, not just a look at your monitoring app. Most homeowners never go through that process, and most installers won't offer to unless pushed.

Read both numbers on the spec sheet, not just the bigger one. A panel with a 12-year product warranty and a 25-year performance warranty is not a "25-year panel." It's a panel that will probably keep making most of its rated power for 25 years, assuming it doesn't physically fail somewhere in the first 12, in which case you're on your own.

Inverter warranty is the one that actually gets used

Here's the uncomfortable truth from six years of installs: inverters fail more often than panels, and far sooner. Panels are largely passive — no moving parts, no fans, nothing switching at high frequency. Inverters are full of electronics doing hard work constantly, and they're the component I'd bet on failing first, generally somewhere in the 10-15 year window for a decent unit, sooner for a cheap one. Standard inverter warranties from reputable brands run 5-10 years as a baseline, with many manufacturers offering paid extensions out to 15 or 20 years. That extension is worth taking seriously, particularly on hybrid inverters managing a battery, where the switching duty cycle is higher. One thing that trips people up: inverter warranty claims are almost always handled directly with the manufacturer, not your installer, once you're past the first year or two. If your installer goes out of business — and a fair few solar installers have over the years — the manufacturer warranty on the inverter itself generally survives that. It's the workmanship warranty that dies with the company.

Workmanship warranty: the one nobody reads properly

This is the warranty that covers the installer's own work — mounting, wiring, waterproofing the roof penetrations, DC isolator placement, cable runs. It's usually the shortest term of the lot, commonly 5-10 years, and it's the one I'd actually put weight behind, because it's the failure mode I saw most often on-site: a dodgy flashing around a roof penetration letting water in two years later, or a cable gland that wasn't sealed properly. The catch is obvious once you say it out loud: a workmanship warranty is only as good as the business that issued it. If the installer folds — and the churn in this industry has been significant, licensing and compliance requirements have tightened a lot over the past decade in both Australia and the US, but plenty of smaller outfits still don't survive five years — that warranty is worthless paper. This is why choosing an installer with a real track record matters more than the number printed on the workmanship clause. A 10-year workmanship warranty from a company that's been trading two years is a much weaker promise than a 5-year one from an outfit that's been doing local roofs for fifteen.

Ask specifically who underwrites the workmanship warranty — sometimes it's backed by a separate insurance product, which survives the installer going under. If nobody can answer that question clearly in the sales meeting, that's a flag worth noting.

What a real quote should spell out (and what a vague one hides)

A properly itemised solar quote lists each warranty separately with its own term, and names who honours each one — the panel manufacturer, the inverter manufacturer, and the installer. If a quote just has a single "25-year warranty" line with no breakdown, that's not a warranty summary, it's a marketing line. I'll say something a bit blunt here: I don't think the headline warranty term should be a major deciding factor between two otherwise-similar systems. A panel with a 25-year product warranty from a manufacturer that's only been in the local market for three years is a weaker bet than a 12-year warranty from a manufacturer that's been supplying panels to your region since before you owned the house. Warranty length means nothing if the company backing it doesn't exist in year eight. I'd rather see a shorter warranty from a manufacturer with an established local office and clear claims process — REC and similarly established tier-one brands generally fall into that camp — than chase the longest number on a spec sheet from a name I've never had to call for a warranty claim.

Warranty terms interact with system sizing and roof condition

A warranty is only worth what it protects, and it protects an installed system, not a hypothetical one. If your roof needs re-sheeting or re-flashing in year eight, the panel and inverter warranties don't cover the cost of pulling the array off and refitting it. That's on you, and it's a genuinely underrated reason to check roof condition properly before installing, not after. If your roof has 15 years of usable life left and you're installing a 25-year-warrantied system, you're going to be removing and reinstalling panels at some point regardless of what the warranty paper says — worth factoring that labour cost into the decision now rather than being surprised by it later. Sizing matters here too. An oversized system that's clipping output or running an inverter harder than it needs to may shorten the inverter's working life well before its warranty term expires, warranty or no warranty. Reading the fine print before you sign

A few practical checks I'd run on any quote before signing. First, ask for the manufacturer's actual warranty document, not the installer's summary of it — summaries sometimes round up. Second, check whether the performance warranty degradation curve is linear or stepped; a stepped curve that drops sharply in year one then flattens reads better on paper than it performs in the early years. Third, confirm in writing who handles warranty claims logistics — will the installer coordinate a manufacturer claim on your behalf, or are you expected to deal with an overseas manufacturer's support line directly? That last one matters more than people expect; I've seen homeowners spend months on a claim because nobody local was willing to be the go-between. None of this means warranties are pointless — they're not, and a well-backed one genuinely protects you. It just means the number on the brochure is the start of the question, not the answer to it. Ask who's actually standing behind each piece, and for how long, before you sign anything.
