Home EV Charger Buying Guide: What the Specs Actually Mean
Most EVs ship with a basic charging cable that plugs into a standard household outlet — technically enough to charge overnight, but slowly. A dedicated home charger (often called Level 2 in the US, or simply a "home charging unit" in Australia) is what most owners end up installing. Here's what the specs mean.
Power rating: bigger isn't always usable
Home chargers are commonly available from around 7kW up to 22kW, but two things cap how much of that you can actually use: your home's electrical supply (a single-phase household connection typically can't deliver the top end of that range) and your vehicle's onboard charger, which has its own maximum AC charging rate regardless of what the wallbox can supply. Check your car's onboard charger spec before paying extra for a charger rated well above it.
Smart features that are worth paying for
- Scheduled / off-peak charging — start charging automatically in a cheap tariff window.
- Solar-aware charging — throttle charging speed to match available solar surplus rather than drawing from the grid.
- App-based monitoring — genuinely useful for tracking cost and usage, less essential than the above two.
Installation realities
The unit price is often a smaller line item than the installation — running new circuit capacity to the garage or driveway, potentially upgrading your switchboard, and (depending on your charger's rated output and local rules) getting the work signed off by a licensed electrician. Get a firm, itemised quote that separates hardware from install labour and any switchboard work, rather than a single bundled number.
Vehicle-to-grid / vehicle-to-home: still emerging
V2G/V2H hardware lets a compatible EV discharge power back into your home (or the grid) — useful during an outage, or to shift your home's load away from peak pricing using the car's battery instead of a dedicated home battery. Compatible vehicles and chargers are still a minority of the market as of this writing, and the economics depend heavily on local utility rules around exporting from a vehicle. Worth asking about when you buy your next EV, not yet something to plan your charger purchase entirely around.
Bottom line
Match the charger's power rating to what your car and your electrical supply can actually use, prioritise off-peak/solar-aware scheduling over app polish, and get installation quoted separately from hardware.
